Rheinauhafen
From the Middle Ages to the middle of the 19th century, “Werthchen,” an island located between the Bayen Tower and the Romanesque church St. Maria Lyskirchen, served as a place for the local population to relax. At the end of the 19th century, however, “Werthchen” developed into a pulsating centre for river cargo, known as Rheinauhafen. Today, over 100 years later, the area between the old city, the southern districts, the Rhine and the19th-century harbour edifices has become an exciting space for urban renewal.
Guided tours of Rheinauhafen take place in collaboration with HGK Häfen and Güterverkerkehr Köln AG www.hgk.de
